The City of No Limits

In this gripping thriller, an elderly Spanish man in a Paris hospital (Fernando Fernan-Gomez) awaits surgery for a brain tumor, which, his family believes, has made him mad.  Only the old man’s youngest son Victor (Leonardo Sbaraglia) believes his ramblings about a mysterious man named “Rancel,” whom he claims is in danger.  Torn between two women, and uninterested in the family business, Victor is at odds with his siblings.  To make matters worse, the closer Victor gets to solving his father’s mysteries, the more his cold-hearted mother (Geraldine Chaplin) throws him off course with potentially dangerous lies.  With brilliant performances and storytelling, THE CITY OF NO LIMITS captivates from beginning to end.

Raggae Nashville–Deep Roots Music 2

The ultimate word on the history of reggae, this six-part series, shot on film by an Oscar nominated cameraman, was produced in the early 1980s, just after the premature death of Bob Marley.  It was a time to look back and to look forward.  The films feature some amazing archive, much of it never seen before, of how Jamaican music developed before it became famous world-wide.  Film-maker Howard Johnson interviewed the important figures who had influenced the course of the music.  Along with musical performances there are interviews with cultural historians, folklorists and musicologists, along with those who created the music and those involved in the early days of Mento, Ska, Rock Steady and the sound systems.  Also toasters, record producers and many great reggae artists of the day.

Ingmar Bergman’s Persona

With some of the most iconic imagery every committed to film, this “exceptionally beautiful specimen of movie-making” (The New Yorker) is recognized as a modern masterpiece and a landmark in late twentieth-century art” [Time Out London]. Actress Elisabet Vogler (Live Ullmann) has stopped speaking and with drawn completely.  Under doctor’s orders, she’s taken to a remote seaside cottage by a nurse, Alma (Bibi Andersson).  Alma chats to fill the silence and gradually begins to lay bare her entire identity...until she discovers it is being coolly sucked away from her.  As the women battle for control and sanity, the question becomes not which of them is patient and which is caregiver, but are they two separate women at all?

Georges Meiles–First Wizard of Cinema (1896-1913)

Georges Melies built the world’s first movie studio in 1896 near Paris; from it cascaded fantastic magic films, dream films, historical reconstructions, imaginary journeys, melodramas, slapstick comedies–even erotic films. Examples of all are here, with many still retaining power to astonish and charm.  This monumental thirteen hour collection on five DVDs gathers for the first time nearly all the surviving films of Georges Melies form his first Card Party (1896) to his last, The Voyage of the Bouririchon Family (1913), bracketing more than 170 others.

The Battleship Potemkin

When you think of the handful of films that are at the core of cinema history, you think of D.W. Griffith’s “The Birth of a Nation”, Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane”–and Sergei Eisenstein’s THE BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN. Back in 1925, the immediate worldwide success of THE BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN focused attention on the Soviet cinema while earning its creator instant, lasting fame.  Before the end of the decade, Eisenstein’s contributions to the art form (along with those of two other filmmakers, Alexnder Dovzenko and V.I. Pudovkin) would push Soviet cinema to the forefront of the international film scene. THE BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN evolved from a film project assigned to Eisenstein by the Soviet Central Committee in charge of planning celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the unsuccessful 1905 Russian Revolution.  (The 27-year-old Eisenstein was then a Red Army veteran, theater director and set designer. Two years before he filmed his debut feature, Strike”.)  Eisenstein initially conceived of the film as an eight-part epic, titled “The Year of 1905” (or “Year 1905”), to be set throughout the Soviet Union, and chronicle dozens of revolutionary actions.  As he was shooting in Odessa, he decided to narrow his concept and focus on a sole event–a mutiny by a battleship’s crew and the subsequent massacre of civilian–that reflected the spirit of the times.

At Five In The Afternoon

This film by internationally acclaimed Iranian director Samira Makmalbaf is the first to be made in Afghanistan following the fall of the Taliban regime.  Set in the ruined city of Kabul, it tells the story of Noqreh, a young woman eager to take advantage of the new freedoms and opportunities afforded to women.  Despite her father’s wishes that she receive only a traditional religious education, Noqreh also attends a secular school for girls, where she is inspired by the idea of becoming Afghanistan’s first woman President.  But the harsh reality of survival in a country devastated by war threaten her dreams and aspirations.  A touching and resonant analysis of the struggle faced by Afghan women, ‘At Five in the Afternoon’ is a poetic and compelling combination of realist drama and striking imagery and Makhmalbaf’s most ambitious film to date.

The Perfume of the Lady in Black

Director Francesco Barilli’s hallucinatory horror-thriller stars Mimsy Farmer who portrays Sylvia, a chemist who begins to suffer from strange visions; a mysterious woman in black applying perfume in a mirror appears to her and strangers follower her everywhere she goes.  Barilli’s psychological investigation into the workings of the mind becomes apparent when it is revealed that as a child, Sylvia committed a horrible crime.  The slow progression from successful scientist to a woman on the verge of insanity shows an in-depth look at the intricacies of the haunted mind.  This is a remarkable film, weaving reality, fantasy and memory into an almost seamless fabric.

Let’s Scare Jessica To Death

Finally released from an institution after suffering a nervous breakdown, Jessica (Zohra Lampert, Opening Night, Stanley & Iris) seeks the tranquility of a secluded home in Connecticut to help make her recovery complete.  But instead of a restful recuperation with her husband Duncan (Barton Heyman) and a close friend (Kevin O’Connor) in the New England countryside, Jessica soon finds herself falling into a swirling vortex of madness and the supernatural.  And an even more unsettling discovery is that the entire region seems to be under the influence of a mysterious woman the trio finds living in the supposedly empty house. Jessica’s fear and dread only intensify when she discovers that the “undead” girl, Emily, tragically drowned long ago, on her wedding day.  Is she back to take vengeance...and scare Jessica to death?

Cisco Pike

Just released from prison for drug-dealing, Cisco Pike (Kris Kristofferson) dreams of making a comeback. A once-famous rock singer, he finds his music contacts are more interested in his dope connections than in his new songs.  Pike’s plan to go straight however, go somewhat awry when he’s blackmailed by a crooked narc (Gene Hackman) into selling $10,000 worth of stolen marijuana.  Forced back into a business he thought he was out of, Pike drops in on friends, groupies and musicians as he tries to move a 100-kilo stash in just 53 hours.  Co-starring Karen Black, Harry Dean Stanton, Doug Sahm, Joy Bang and Warhol superstar Viva!, CISCO PIKE is a revealing look at the music scene of the early ‘70s offbeat and unique.

Brotherhood

Adam Buckely finds himself in the middle of a convenience store, robbery during his last night as a pledge for a college fraternity.  When the initiation ritual goes horribly wrong and everything starts falling apart, Adam is forced to choose between his new brothers or his ethics.

Cannibal Girls

SCTV regular Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin star in this Canadian horror spoof as a couple on  a romantic holiday who settle into a quaint little bed-and-breakfast run by a trio of flesh-eating ladies who fancy them for tomorrow’s menu.  Released in 1973 and directed by then largely-unknown Ivan Reitman, Cannibal Girls quickly acquired a reputation as the B-movie concoction of the 1970s.  Canadian audiences had never before experienced such a rich blend of camp, gore and comedy.  On top of the film’s overt B-movie presentation, the theater-going public was also introduced to the “warning bell” experience:  just prior to a scene of particular malice, the easily upset viewers would be warned by the sound of a bell, at which point they could shut their eyes.  Experience the gore like never before–mastered from the newly restored original film element–as Cannibal Girls finally makes the debut on DVD.

Xala

This savagely funny satire portrays El Hadji, a prosperous, self-satisfied, politically crooked modern businessman who is struck down by the xala (pronounced "ha-la") - a curse rendering its victim impotent. While he chases after witch doctors and soothsayers on a frantic, often hilarious search for a cure, his impotence becomes a mirror of the powerlessness of young African nations over dependent on white technology. Unable to consummate his third (polygamous) marriage, and neglecting his business affairs and political activities as he seeks a cure, his social stature is stripped away, leaving him shamed and humiliated. And while humorous, there is a sympathy in his downfall at the hands of others who are even more corrupt than he is. XALA is a moving and comical look at a man caught up in the corruption of his country and the tribulations of a changing society.

Innocence Unprotected

This utterly unclassifiable film is one of Makavejev’s most freewheeling farces, assembled from the “lost” footage of the first Serbian talkie, a silly melodrama titled Innocence Unprotected, made during the Nazi occupation; contemporary interviews with the megaman who made it and other crew members; and images of the World War II destruction, and subsequent rebuilding, of Belgrade. And at its center is a (real-life) character you won’t soon forget: Dragoljub Aleksic, an acrobat, locksmith, and Houdini-style escape artist whom Makavejev uses as the absurd and wondrous basis for a look back at his country’s tumultuous recent history.

Love at Large

Oscar nominees Tom Berenger (Platoon) and Anne Archer (Fatal Attraction) team with an all-star cast, including Elizabeth Perkins (He Said, She Said), Ted Levine (Ali), Ann Magnuson (Panic Room), Kate Capshaw (Love Affair) and songwriter Neil Young, in this “giddy, quirky and wonderful-to-watch movie” (Judith Crist) that delves into more than just the mysteries of love!  Henry Dobbs (Berenger) takes his job as a private detective seriously.  Hired by a mysterious seductress (Archer) to follow her boyfriend, Harry soon discovers that the man he’s following is not so much the marrying kind...as he is the murdering kind! And it’ll take the help of another sleuth (Perkins)–hired to keep an eye on Harry–to capture this dangerous lothario and steal Harry’s heart in the process!

Vibrator

Directed by international rising star Ryuichi Hiroki (I am an S&M Writer, Tokyo Trash Baby, It’s Only Talk) and based on the acclaimed novel by Mari Akasaka, Vibrator follows Rei (the extraordinary Shinobu Terashima), a thirty-something freelance writer wrestling with psychological instability and a penchant for booze.  One night while shopping for beer at an urban mini-mart, Rei runs into Okabe (Nao Omori, of Takashi Miike’s Ichi the Killer), a handsome young trucker pit stopping for gas and munchies.  Impulsive and captivated, she climbs into his rig for an impromptu road trip.  But what begins as a one night pick-up becomes a transformative journey of sexual and emotional self-discovery.  Psychologically raw and surprisingly uplifting, Vibrator represents a creative milestone for director Hiroki.  With its frank approach to sexuality, relationships and personal liberation, the film is, as Tom Mes of the online cult Japanese film journal Midnight Eye writes, “one of the most universally resonant and downright important statements cinema today can hope to deliver.”
